Dump your partner on Facebook

Image of a person being put in a bin as if they were dumped via Facebook

I had dinner recently with a friend who at first appeared to be under the weather, followed by a look of disbelief and finally, turning red with anger. Are these the emotional phases you go through when dumped by your girlfriend via Facebook?

Being dumped is bad enough. To be dumped by email or SMS is worse, but what’s society coming to when we dump our (once) loved ones on a social network?

Fredrick (that’s a fictitious name because I obviously don’t have any friends with a name like that), didn’t even receive a message via Facebook. Heck, his significant other half didn’t even write on his wall. Poor Fredrick had to be told by his flat mate who noticed that his, by now, ex-girfriend had changed her ’status’ from ‘in a relationship’ to ’single’. To make matters worse, she changed her status to ‘looking for whatever I can get’ too.

If I’m honest, I couldn’t stop laughing when he first told me. In fact, I took the piss out of him for at least half an hour (I know, that’s unlike me) before feeling sorry for him, realising how bemused I was by her actions.

So, is this a record? Is this the worst (possibly most effective) method to dump someone? Have we made history by seeing the first person dumped in this fashion on Facebook? One thing is for sure, Accel Partners (Facebook investor) must be thrilled with the way in which Facebook has become a topic of conversation in most circles. If people I know aren’t talking about it, I’m getting them to join.

[Update] I need to point out that I asked for permission before writing this blog post. In fact, we’re actually discussing how funny it all is on Facebook. Ok Michelle? ;) xx

Well if blogging about a ‘friend’ and I think its best to use the term loosely when they have had a tough time wasn’t adding insult to injury with extra public humiliation then I don’t know what is Walshy!!! Isn’t it lovely that we live in a generation in which exposing our friends into their own world and discussing their misfortune is in fact encouraged…. Goodness I love how together as a group we are and how we support each other!! I got told once that the way therapy works in Aberdeen is that you tell your Gran what’s wrong she tells the whole village, they take the piss out of you and you soon feel better… Its obviously the 2.0 version of therapy too ;-))
Of course whilst I say all of this, it is all quite classic as misfortune goes ;)) And too our friend who it happened too – we are with you really, see this as our version of a hug xxx

oooooohhhhh - Michelle m’ dear, you don’t honestly think I would have blogged it had I not asked for permission first? In fact, we’re having a conversation about how funny it is on Facebook (private messages).

You should know me better than that xx

Wow Michelle does have a lovely way of putting things - I can never write like that without putting a hyphen everywhere!

I’m sure “FREDERICK” is putting on a brave face right now and working out subtle ways to get you back Walshy.

My brother once added that he was looking for men to his Facebook profile. That shocked me for a while, until it turned out that he had left himself logged in and one of his friends had changed it.

I think I would have acted in the same way that you did if I knew someone to have been dumped though, I’d have felt sorry for them after laughing it off first.

Would being dumped by Twitter be any better? Or worse?

@Philip - he was more than happy with me blogging about it as he saw the funny side. He also knows that I wouldn’t have written anything out of malice.

@Phil - Twitter? That would probably be better if the other half was a follower :)

Dumping through a social network is bad, but even worse is s complete personal blind-side. A company called youmail which provides free personalized voicemail now offers a service called “ditchmail” where you leave a voicemail greeting for your unsuspecting partner (in which you tell them “It’s not you it’s me… blah blah” then it hangs up and doesn’t even allow them to leave a voicemail. Horrible. But good for getting rid of stalker-ish guys.

@Lauren - love it. I was going to setup a Web site around 10 years ago called dumpedonline.com but hey, we can all come up with ideas (even the bad ones like mine). It’s those that execute ideas that are to be admired.
