Speak up, I’m on the plane
May 26, 2008 //

If Ofcom allows passengers to make mobile phone calls on the plane, would you choose an alternative mode of transport? I’d certainly consider it.
I read today with interest, Richard Tyler’s post on the subject. Listening to people on the train is bad enough, but at least you can move if it really drives you mad. It’s not really as if you can change seat on a plane.
Richard argues
- You can already make calls using airplane phones - it just costs more
- Enabling regular business travellers to use their airline seat as a mobile office would improve productivity
- Business travellers speaking too loudly on their phones are likely to respond reasonably when asked to speak more quietly
I’m not sure I’d agree that business travellers are more likely to respond reasonably to people asking them to reduce the air pollution. If anything, they might get snotty and tell you to mind your own business.
What do you think? Would you like to see mobile phone calling introduced by airlines?

I welcome it.
If people have a problem the airline could always have ‘phone rows’. The reality is - very few people will spend the entire time on the phone.

Allowing people to use their phones will make money for the airlines from what I’ve understood.
Being stuck beside some idiot who wants to discuss their libido on the phone would drive me mad. If I can’t smoke on the plane why the hell should I have to listen to other people’s loud conversations?
