The Irish need to live up to the great name we have for partying so come and help us generate the loudest Mozilla PARTY around the world to celebrate the Firefox 3 launch.
The party is being sponsored by BT, Putplace.com, Blacknight Hosting, Segala, wubud and Mozilla is sending over lots of prizes/swag for us to give away on the night.
Registration to attend is required. Over 100 people have already registered so make sure you get your name on the list before it’s closed. Register here.
I’d like to thank Barry Alistair from IOTC for helping us secure the venue. The party will be streamed live thanks to intruders.tv. Bookmark the page where you can view the party live.
This is a great opportunity to network with the Irish tech industry.

Top Cats gathering in June
May 27, 2008 // 1 Comment
I’m delighted to announce June 12th as the date for the next gathering of Top Cats. We’re testing out Adam Street private members club for the next gathering - One Alfred Place was good, but a 21:30 finish is a little early.
If you’re a Top Cat, pencil it in now. Please don’t register your interest just yet - I just wanted to give you a heads up. I received a response from 70 Top Cats within 24 hours of sending out the invite for May. So, make sure you’ve got your finger on the ’send’ button.
Sponsored by
Our thanks for June’s sponsorship goes to TH_NK
How to become a Top Cat
The purpose of the event is to forge greater collaboration between London’s Internet startup, Web design, interactive marketing, mobile, TV and advertising communities at the highest level.
Top Cats are now permitted to recommend up to 2 new members each month. To become a member of this exclusive club, you’ll need to be recommended by another Top Cat. Less than 20% of recommendations make it however, so please don’t be offended if you don’t get accepted
Sponsorship opportunity for future gatherings
Get in touch if you’d like to sponsor a future Top Cat event. Email paul@segala.com

Win a free ticket for the BIMA Spring Party
May 14, 2008 // 8 Comments
With well over 100 tickets gone, the BIMA Spring Party is likely to be a cracking event. It’s certainly one you won’t want to miss. The venue has a roof terrace so let’s hope the sun is shining!
To win a free ticket, all you have to do is leave a comment on this post and I’ll pick 3 names out of a hat. To demonstrate transparency, I’ll stream it live via my Qik channel.
I’ll draw the names on Friday.
BIMA Spring party update
May 9, 2008 // 1 Comment
Please read my previous post if this party is news to you.
I thought it was worth providing an update as we’ve seen just over 100 tickets go within a couple of days. There are only 200 tickets available so please make sure to register to avoid disappointment. Everyone is welcome; agencies, brands, technology providers, freelancers, students, graduates, civil servants, bloggers, twitters… you get the picture. It doesn’t matter what industry you’re from either. It’ll be a night to remember!
Tickets are free for BIMA members and just £15 for non-members. I’ve noticed registrations from at least 4 countries so far. Keep ‘em coming and see you on May 20th. Register now.
I’d like to thank diffusion for sponsoring the event. Please get in touch if you’d like to sponsor.

SF, NYC and HK in two weeks
April 15, 2008 // 1 Comment
I wrote recently about my upcoming trip with The Web Mission to San Francisco, detailing my ‘military precision’ like agenda (as Ben Metcalf called it). I’m publishing this post as I’ve since added an extension. I’m now scheduled to hit a few more places direct from San Francisco:
- New York between April 25th and 28th (departing early morning) Staying at The Marriott, downtown. So meetups there, or close by would be very convenient
- Hong Kong between April 28th and May 1st
- Back to the UK
I twittered my new itinerary just a few moments ago and I’ve had a few people suggest meetups. I’ve got some plans during my stay, but let me know if you, or anyone you know, would like to host a breakfast or lunch on either the 26th or 27th in New York. Let me know if I should meet anyone specific while I’m in town.
I’m not likely to have much time to do meetings in Hong Kong unless people are around West Hong Kong.
I haven’t yet worked out how long it takes to fly between each country as I’ve been using a great concierge service called tenuk.com thanks to The Web Mission. I have access to this service 24/7. Fantastic!
Twitter tips for new users
April 11, 2008 // 8 Comments
I’ve been using Twitter for some time now. It has almost replaced my RSS reader completely and to a degree, my reliance on Google to find stuff. If I want to find out the latest gossip or ask for advice on how to use something new, I head straight for Twitter.com. If I want to find the latest world news I simply scroll through all the conversations for the past few hours - everything of real importance is likely to have been discussed there before anywhere else. You won’t just find stories, you’ll find opinions on those stories.
I was in New York recently to take part in a panel discussion about Mobile TV. Whenever I wanted a recommendation for a restaurant within walking distance, or the address of a specific clothes shop, I turned to my Twitter community. Within minutes I had the answers to any question I asked. Some people went as far as to Google restaurants and read the reviews before making recommendations to me.
Here are some tips for new users
Most people will only spend a few seconds reviewing your Twitter page before deciding whether to follow you or not. The more followers they have, the less time they’re likely to spend. So, these tips should help increase the chances of people following you.
- Use your full name - don’t just display a screen name.
- Fill in the bio. Include a few words that describe you. Try to make it punchy. Say what you do for a living.
- Link to a Web page that’s relevant, preferably a blog or Facebook page.
- Don’t follow everyone you find interesting at once. Wait for some of them to reciprocate, or you’ll look like a stalker.
- Using a company name as your screen name is ok for some people. Jason Calacanis, Loren Feldman and Mike Arrington are amongst the ‘exception to the rule’ category. I personally prefer to follow people, not companies.
- Be honest, open and above all, be yourself.
- Be patient. You won’t build relationships or feel the community spirit over night. It take a little getting used to. Use twitter to have conversations with people for at least a few weeks before forming an opinion.
- If you’re unsure whether to publish a comment, publish it. Ok, that’s probably not the best tip, but it’s what I do all the time. Sometimes it doesn’t work in my favour but mostly it does as people know that what they see is the real me.
Feel free to follow me on Twitter and drop me a note to say you read this post. It’s always nice to see where people come from.
Have I missed anything? What tips would you give?
Look who’s coming to Top Cats in May
April 10, 2008 // 4 Comments
I sent out the invitation for our upcoming Top Cats this morning. I’m lazy (Loch is lazier as he does even less) so didn’t bother to use Underwired to send out the email. Instead, I emailed the 450 Top Cats in batches of 20 to 30, to help bypass filters that stop emails with a lot of email addresses in the To field. Therein lies the hint. I put everyone’s email address in the ‘To’ field instead of BCC’ing them. I immediately sent out an apology for distributing emails with the following note
Dear Top Cat,
Today I decided to send out the invitations in groups of 20 to 30, as it looks like some company filters automatically block emails with a lot of contacts in the To field. What I failed to realise was that I put your email address in the ‘To’ field instead of BCC. This means approximately 25 other people know your email address.
I apologise profusely for the screw up. I’ll revert back to using a professional company for email distribution. Felix from Underwired.com - expect an email from me soon!
The good news is that everyone on the list is obviously more professional than me and will assume your details should be kept confidential.
Some of them just laughed whilst others said that it was a privilege to be such a list anyway. Phew!
Behind every cloud lies a silver lining. I received 30 confirmations within 15 minutes of sending out the invitation with sample names in the To field. If you’ve been to this event in the past and didn’t get an invite, get in touch before it’s too late.
Whilst you might not recognise some of the companies on the list, it’s extremely likely that the Founders are either backed by an investor, or have previously sold at least one company.
Look at who’s coming in June
I will continue to update the list as more Top Cats RSVP. Keep an eye on the post if you want to see who else is coming.
