The Web’s 20 most visible individuals in the UK
November 25, 2008 //
Using channels such as Twitter, Facebook, Flickr and YouTube, NowPublic has listed below, the Web’s 20 most visible individuals in the UK.
Their formula gauges connectivity and “publicness” across four categories, including:
- Online Visibility
- Presence on User-Generated Content and Social Networking Sites
- Interactivity and Accessibility
- The “R” Factor: Presence on Microblogging Platforms (Flickr, Twitter, Tumblr, etc.)
They also used Alexa and Compete, which I personally think are worthless. For example, visitors to your site must use the Alexa toolbar (considered by Spybot as spyware) in order for their visits to count. So, if you don’t have a techie driven audience, they’re less likely to have the toobar installed and your site’s rating will suffer as a consequence. Anyway, that’s for another debate.
Here’s the list:
- Rory Cellan-Jones
- Darren Waters
- Iain Dale
- Paul Bradshaw
- Erik Huggers
- Tom Coates
- Ewan McIntosh
- Stephen Fry
- Nick Robinson
- Neil McIntosh
- Suw Charman-Anderson
- Alan Connor
- Kevin Anderson
- Andy Murray
- Charles Arthur
- Ian Betteridge
- Robert Peston
- Jon Kossman
- Jack Schofield
- Euan Semple
What do you make of the list? Do they deserve to be there? Who is it missing, if anyone?

You Paul, you’re missing. They clearly weren’t measuring volume…

What exactly is the point of the list? Is it a list of people who have the biggest audience online? Seems to me they are mostly journalists except of Mr Fry

Would be nice to see who are the most visible because of social networking versus this list which is mainly those who are already in very visible, public positions. Stewart comments that most are journalists.
I suspect the quality of their network is higher as journalism is what they do and hence they have the contacts anyway, but there is an emerging social scene of independents (i follow as many of them as i can).
It’s all good, but i do think there are separate clouds.

I saw this list this morning thanks to Alan Patrick. (@freecloud) Journalists by their very nature are followers not leaders and they report on the value created by other people like:
Simon Willison
Ian Forrester
Nick Halstead
Andy Mitchell
Alan Patrick
Umair Haque
Gary Reid
Pat Phelan
Connor ONeill
Matt Biddulph
James Governor
Ben Werdmuller
Andy McLoughlin
Daniel Applequist
Jeremy Keith
Steve Moore
Judith Clegg
Oliver Barrett
Simon Grice
Deidre Malloy
Robert Loch
Amanda Rose
Stewart Townsend
Helen Keegan
Sam Michel
Ian Delany
Paul Walsh
These are the people in the UK who are creating value with new technologies or events.
This list is not exhaustive but off the top of my head. I would not add any VC’s to this list.

Disappointed not to make the list but I only know 5 so it’s not surprising.

Not many women on the list?
Does the tech way of measuring them exclude their visibility or are they just plain not bothered about it?
November 27th, 2008
So… I think lists like this are likely to miss people, no matter who creates them - mostly because they can only include people they know.
@Thomas - you’re never going to make a list if you continue to leave a signature in blog comments
Sarah - I don’t think it should include women for the sake of it. But I’m sure you didn’t mean that anyway. I’d love to see a list that includes as many business women (and men) as possible - like a directory.
… I’ve just come up with an idea.

Thomas - it’s visible - you’re on the risible list.

I spend my life on the web and I had to look up half of those people to see who they were! Makes me wonder “visible to WHO?”
